Will Ai Take Over Web Design?

In short - no, in my professional opinion I do not believe artificial intelligence will take over web design and development jobs in their entirety. But why?

Web Builders and Ai

Retro Robot - Ai Character

We are seeing a lot of web builders boasting their newly developed Ai tools to build a “quick” website.
Companies such as Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, and Square are pushing the use of the feature daily in hopes of increasing their sales and cutting out designers, or who I call, builders.

This causes concern for those that call themselves designers, but are truly a middle man - a builder.

Since the surfacing of these platforms a few years back we saw a massive increase in people calling themselves “web designers”. The reason I take a bit of a sarcastic tone with these designers is that their role is purely a middle-man between the platform and the client. More often than not, they utilize template based designs provided by these companies, and fill in the blanks for the clients. These are the designers who are signing on clients for $1,000-$3,000 and turning around within a few weeks, or even days time. .

The issue with these “builders” as I call them, is the sites they make lack quite a few things needed to provide a successful website to their clients:

  • Planning: leads to a strong user-flow and high conversion rate
  • Customized Design: makes a strong and lasting impact on users, enhancing brand recall
  • SEO: site pages lack proper structure making it difficult to crawl

When we hear “Ai will take over web designers roles” these are the type of designers we are talking about. The designers that surfaced with the rise of template based websites such as wix, squarespace, and shopify. With Ai, these platforms can cut out the middleman and continue to implement their Ai created websites and make a higher profit off their users.

Ai & Web Designers

This leads me to my overall point: Ai will be a great resource for true web designers and developers, but won’t replace their role entirely. There are dozens of ways in which we can utilize Ai to enhance our workflow and speed up the ideation process.

  • Image editing & Generation: Generative fill is a web designers new love. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to utilize a specific image in a web design, but the aspect ratio isn’t quite right and the image was already too zoomed in to crop properly. Generative Ai makes photoshopping the image MUCH faster allowing me to continue to focus on the site.
  • Content Suggestions: If you aren’t quite as knowledgeable in a clients field of work, you can use ChatGPT or Jasper to help you generate content ideas, placeholder text that is relevant to the client, or even search engine optimized copy for your site.
  • Personalized User Experience: UX Design tools such as Figma, offer plugins that are capable of stimulating a personalized journey based on Ai-driven user personas and behaviors. This helps text your prototype before you take it to the development stage.
  • Color Palette & Typography Ideation: Ai tools such as Coolors, Khroma, or FontJoy can help during the ideation stage of your overall web or brand design. These tools generate color palettes that flow together along with typography pairings that can match your specific brand aesthetic.

These are just a few ways in which Ai can speed the process of your overall design and development.

Websites Need a Human Touch

While Ai can assist in the overall process of ideation and identifying possible pain points, keep in mind that a successful website needs to have a customized, human touch.

People relate to people and brands that lack personality won’t connect with their audience.

This is the reason solely Ai created websites won’t convert in the same way that a customized web design will.

Keep it human, keep it custom.
